           IRISH HISTORY WRITING CONTEST

                                   2009 ~ 2010

This ia a fabulous opportunity for youth in 6 to 12 grade levels from public, private parochial and
home schooled to compete in the National Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernian’s Irish history contest.

  Subject: Level I, grades 6, 7 & 8,  "Role of Women in 1916 Rebellion"

                  Not less than 500 or more  than 1000 words.

          LEVEL II, grades 9-12, "The Irish Playing the Game: The Sports of the World"

                  Not less than 750 or more than 1,500 words.

Guidelines: must be double spaced legible hand written or typed, single sided  paper, with typeface
NOT exceeding 12 point.  Essay must have a separate cover sheet to include: contestant’s Name, Home address, age, School name, address, Grade level, subject and word count exclusive of cover page, introduction and bibliography. 

Due on or before Jan 5, 2010

MLA handbook is a good tool to consult.  Be sure to include a correct bibliography on
the information consulted.

JUDGING CRITERIA: Comprehension & thought 1-30 pts., Organization 1-20 pts
Conclusion(s) 1-15 pts, Creativity 1-20 pts, Writing 1-15 pts.  Final score obtained
by adding all categories together.

Cash Prizes: First, second and thirds place
Local Awards:  To be announced
Ohio Awards:
Level I, $50, $35 and $25. 
Level II $100, $75 and $50 
National Awards:
Level I $500, $250, $125 two Honorable Mention at $50 each. 
Level II $1,000, $500, $250, two Honorable Mention at $100 each.
